Pluralizing Journalism Education

Pluralizing Journalism Education

$101.48

The Rodney King verdict and the subsequent Los Angeles riots dramatized how important it is today for mass-media communicators to help Americans deal with a widening gulf in understanding between classes and races. Current population statistics demonstrate how important non-whites and women will be in our educational system and in the workforce by the year 2000. This handbook for teachers and practitioners shows how to pluralize the curriculum to encourage diversity, how to recruit and retain journalism students and faculty of color, and how to make college newsrooms and classrooms more multicultural, both in attitude and action. Academics and professionals concerned with the issues surrounding the mass media in a racially and ethnically pluralistic America will find this reference guide and text full of useful data, ideas, and resource materials. A carefully chosen team of communications experts were recruited to contribute to this professional reference guide. The first section of the handbook serves as an introduction, providing a rationale and a brief history of efforts to pluralize journalism education to date. The second section defines ways to recruit and retain students and faculty of color. The third section systematically surveys ways to pluralize the curriculum in relation to African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and women. It then considers stereotyping, using special presses and methods in teaching, the selection of bias-free textbooks and using laboratory and other publications. The fourth section of the work concerns pluralizing the student media through media coverage, and special campus recruitment and organizations. Bibliographies and lists of key sources of information arranged by chapter with careful cross-referencing offer resource materials for students, teachers, and journalists in mass communication and multicultural studies. A full index makes this reference guide completely accessible for many types of research. Exercises, case studies, and provocative questions make this a basic text for teaching journalism education in a pluralistic society.

Embryo Research in Pluralistic Europe (Wissenschaftsethik und Technikfolgenbeurteilung)

Embryo Research in Pluralistic Europe (Wissenschaftsethik und Technikfolgenbeurteilung)

$136.48

Recent advances in techniques and understanding in the fields of genetics, embryology and reproductive biology have opened up new ways to treat a wide range of medical problems. They range from new options for infertility treatment and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to stem-cell-based therapies for debilitating diseases. Since all these approaches involve the manipulation of human gametes, embryos or embryonic cells, and could also permit more contentious uses, they have stimulated a controversial debate as to what aims are desirable and to what extent experiments on human embryos are morally permissible, if permissible at all. The situation is further complicated by the fact that scientific projects are increasingly realized through international co-operation and that patients are increasingly ready to seek morally contentious medical treatment wherever it is available and thus to bypass national legislation. In view of this situation the Europäische Akademie assembled a temporary interdisciplinary project group in which scientists from universities and non-university research organizations in Europe working on the relevant subjects were brought together and charged with establishing a knowledge base and providing suggestions for long-term solutions that would be acceptable for society. Presented here are the results of this project, ranging from a discussion of the theoretical and practical possibilities in human-embryo experimentation and its alternatives in research on adult stem cells, a comparison of the situations and prospects of regulation of embryo research in Europe, a survey of European public attitudes, and a philosophical analysis of the arguments and argumentative strategies used in the debate.

Public Education in a Multicultural Society

Public Education in a Multicultural Society

This important collection of essays offers a sustained philosophical examination of fundamental questions raised by multicultural education in primary and secondary schools. The essays focus on both theory and policy. They discuss the relation between culture and identity, the role of reason in bridging cultural divisions, and the civic implications of multi-culturalism in the teaching of history and literature. Several of the essays examine aspects of multicultural policies in California and New York, as well as the curriculum guidelines promulgated by the National Council for Social Studies. Although much has been published on the subject of multi-culturalism, including the cultural war on American campuses, there is very little available on the impact of multicultural policies for primary and secondary education. So this is a volume that will be welcomed by all those interested in multicultural education: philosophers and historians of education, sociologists, professional educators and policy-makers.

Education and Society in Germany

Education and Society in Germany

$4.48

The German education system has long been admired and, at times, envied by the rest of Europe, but the history of German educational development is a turbulent one. Concentrating on the post-war German scene, this timely book examines the interrelationship of educational and social developments in Germany from 1810 to the present day.Providing new insights into German history and challenging traditionally-held opinions about Germany, education and society, the author questions, for example, whether Germany’s rapid industrial growth and economic success in the late nineteenth century were based upon its academic development, or the country’s much less acclaimed training in crafts and vocational subjects. The rise of a new academic elite and its possible contribution both to the collapse of Germany’s first democratic government and to the emergence of National Socialism are examined, as are the stagnation of the educational system in West Germany, which led to the student unrest of 1968, and the modern system introduced in East Germany under Soviet influence, which failed to be implemented in an open and democratic fashion. In considering the opportunities offered by re-unification and the effects of emerging reform movements, the author argues that Germany now seems to have reached a new impasse with overcrowded, under-resourced universities, a socially divisive school system and uncertainty as to how to meet the challenges of the next century. The interdisciplinary nature of this volume will make it essential reading for all those interested in German history and politics, comparative education and sociology and a core text for students.
