Cole After Midnight $8.98 Marcus Roberts' Cole After Midnight is actually a tribute to both the terrific pianist/singer Nat "King" Cole and the great composer Cole Porter. The pianist also wrote extensive liner notes explaining how his concept evolved and how it was achieved musically. Roberts avoids the predictable path in honoring Nat King Cole, covering songs both from his days as a singing jazz pianist (while omitting Cole's own classic compositions such as "Straighten Up and Fly Right") and later material when he had become a pop icon (strictly as a vocalist) during the 1950s and 1960s. Two separate elegant solo piano arrangements of "Answer Me, My Love" are utilized to open and close the CD, because Roberts couldn't choose between the two takes. He doesn't mimic Cole's piano style, offering a lush and deliberate "Embraceable You," while his snappy chart of "It's Only a Paper Moon" features two bassists (Roland Guerin and Thaddeus Expose) and drummer Jason Marsalis' crisp brushwork. Cole's influence is the most obvious in his interpretation of "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You." None of the pop songs from Cole's singing days are covered that often by jazz artists, but Roberts does a credible job with "Unforgettable," "Mona Lisa," and especially "Too Young," which features Marsalis' hand drumming. Roberts' one original, the driving Erroll Garner-inspired "Cole After Midnight," provides a segue between the two halves of the CD, with both Marsalis and Leon Anderson on drums. His solo of "I Concentrate on You" is very formal, while the funky "What Is This Thing Called Love" is rather refreshing. "Ace in the Hole" has a dual personality, alternating between up-tempo swing and an exotic Latin vibe, while Roberts' familiar stride style is best heard displayed in "You're the Top." The story is about the people who attacked the ship, and the planning that went into the attack. In the story, several times the war in Yemen is mentioned. This writer was in Yemen when that war started in 1994. This writer has also worked in Iran and in other Arab countries, so he knows how the Americans treat the people, and it is not very good. The conditions in the story in Afghanistan are the very conditions that were in that country from the time Omar took over until the United States ran him out. |

Paper Moon: Songs of Nat King Cole $11.98 Pianist George Shearing re-creates the instrumentation of the classic Nat King Cole trio on this 1995 session, but, rather than try to emulate the original performances, he wisely offers his own perspective on Cole's repertoire.Shearing, who collaborated with Cole on the successful 1961 date Nat King Cole Sings/George Shearing Plays, counts Cole as an early influence and inspiration. For these 14 pieces, he combines his own elegant touch, elements of Cole's style -- including a pianistic approach to Cole's singing style -- as well as some of pianist Teddy Wilson's boppish swing. The most distinctive piece is a highly impressionistic version of Cole's 1948 hit "Nature Boy," which Shearing performs unaccompanied.Cole's trio was propelled by the energy and drive of the guitar and bass. Oscar Moore's guitar, and later that of Irving Ashby and then John Collins, was key, both for rhythm and as a solo voice. All three guitarists had a vintage, amplified sound noted for its warmth and sustaining tone. Shearing's guitarist, Louis Stewart, relies more on the natural tone of the guitar itself. His rhythm work is not as dynamic as Moore's, but it fits well with Shearing's conception. Longtime Shearing bassist Neil Swainson provides a solid foundation for the group and has a balanced, well-recorded presence in the mix. Good to Be Back $5.99 When Natalie Cole released 1989's Good to Be Back, the follow-up to 1987's Everlasting, her fans had become accustomed to her year-long recording gaps for six years, going back to 1983's I'm Ready. So it's not as if her absence was that much of a surprise, but given the ups and downs of her personal life, the album's title could be alluding to something entirely different. (1989 was the year she married drummer, producer and Rufus founder Andre Fischer). At any rate, Good to Be Back continued her popularity in the mainstream and on the adult contemporary chart. The success of four singles -- "As a Matter of Fact," and especially the ballads "Miss You Like Crazy," "Starting Over Again," and "I Do" (a duet with Freddie Jackson) -- belied the album's inability to crack the Top 50 of the album chart. The ballads were (and have continued to be) staples on adult contemporary stations. On the other hand, the disposability of "Safe" and "Somebody's Rocking My Dreamboat" made it all the more evident that Cole was outgrowing the lighter and more upbeat material.
