Jack Kerouac
Is On The Road by Jack Kerouac historic?

Ss For a project we've read a historical book and I read the meaning on the streets, but I'm not sure if it as a historic .. can someone me their opinion?

It is an autobiographical novel set just after the Second World War. They should ask your manager - they are the ones who have the power to decide.

Dr. Sax (Kerouac, Jack)

Dr. Sax (Kerouac, Jack)

$11.98

In this haunting novel of intensely felt adolescence, Jack Kerouac tells the story of Jack Duluoz, a French-Canadian boy growing up, as Kerouac himself did, in the dingy factory town of Lowell, Massachusetts. Dr. Sax, with his flowing cape, slouch hat, and insinuating leer, is chief among the many ghosts and demons that populate Jack's fantasy world. Deftly mingling memory and dream, Kerouac captures the accents and texture of his boyhood in Lowell as he relates Jack's adventures with this cryptic, apocalyptic hipster phantom. "Kerouac dreams of America in the authentic rolling rhythms of a Whitman or a Thomas Wolfe, drunk with eagerness for life." - John K. Hutchens; "Kerouac's peculiar genius infects every page." - The New York Times.

The vision encompasses his fictional rewriting of his personal history, his life-long quest for spiritual enlightenment--both Christian and Buddhist--and his resolute belief in the blending of popular and academic cultural artifacts. $11.98

In his first frankly autobiographical work, Jack Kerouac tells the exhilarating story fo the years when he was writing th books that captivated and infuriated the public, restless years of wandering during which he worked as a railway brakeman in California, a steward on a tramp steamer, and a fire lookout on the crest of Desolation Peak in the Cascde Mountains.

The Jack Kerouac Collection

The Jack Kerouac Collection

$47.98

This triple-disc box set is centered on the reissue and restoration of Jack Kerouac's three long-players: Poetry for the Beat Generation (1959), Blues and Haikus (1959), as well as Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation(1960). The Jack Kerouac Collection (1990) also adds over a half-hour of previously unissued material. These include outtakes from the Blues and Haikus sessions, recitations from On the Road and Visions of Cody from the Steve Allen Plymouth Show, as well as a candid recording from a symposium titled "Is There a Beat Generation," which was held at the Hunter College Playhouse and sponsored by Brandeis University. As a poet, Kerouac's readings were rarely as entertaining as those of his contemporaries William S. Burroughs or Allen Ginsberg. However, the liberation in his writing style is absolutely replete with a youthful joy tethered by somber optimism. His blend of achingly poetic verbiage and stream of consciousness were intersected by his rapier wit and perpetual vision. Much like the instrumental jazz musicians of his time, his poetry and prose were wide open to interpretation and the delivery often bears a crude and uncomfortable nature -- much like the uncertainty that faces many of the characters he animates. Accompanying Kerouac on his spoken-word jazz odysseys are Steve Allen (piano) on Poetry for the Beat Generation as well as Zoot Sims (tenor sax) and Al Cohn (tenor sax) on Blues and Haikus. The Jack Kerouac Collection also includes a 32-page liner-notes booklet with essays and commentary from Ginsberg, Burroughs, Jerry Garcia, Ray Manzarek, David Perry, and Steve Allen, among others. There is also copious discographical, biographical, and bibliographical information as well. This set is an essential piece of Americana and is highly recommended for literary buffs and beatniks alike. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Steve Allen - Piano

American literary sage Jack Kerouac awakened the wanderlust of a generation. Over 50 years later, the search for "beat" and "it" lives on. From Kazakhstan, Rod Burke found Kerouac's spirit alive and well. In the middle of nowhere, through stifling summers, subzero winters, bloodthirsty mosquitoes and complete chaos.everything he was looking for.was always there inside himself. That is beat.

Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation

Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation

$14.98

Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation was the culmination of the author's short-lived recording career, a solo performance that transcends poetry and music -- it's literally spoken jazz, the artist improvising freely on the printed text of his own work in front of him. Produced by Bill Randle, it was Kerouac's most musical performance, despite the fact that the recording contained only his voice and no accompaniment, using his voice and language the way a saxophonist might improvise on a particular melodic line or riff. He's spellbinding throughout, intense, focused, and even subtly changing voices with the work itself. [Reissued in Rhino's Jack Kerouac Collection with a bonus track consisting of an excerpt from a 1958 forum on the existence of the "Beat Generation," held at Hunter College in New York.] ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

The Kerouac Connection

The Kerouac Connection

$14.74

For starters, the title of this double-disc Brew Moore retrospective is misleading. The reason it is called The Kerouac Connection is simply that Moore's hard-swinging lyrical yet physical style was immortalized and highly celebrated in Jack Kerouac's 1965 novel Desolation Angels, which was actually written around the mid-'50s while waiting for the publication of On the Road. In the second of two very different sections of the book, the protagonist has come down from an extended period of solitude as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak. When he enters San Francisco to catch up with old friends, he is sitting in a bar and watching Moore and his band ripping it up on the bandstand, and the author goes on for a few pages about this encounter, which somehow became a euphoric drunken epiphany. That said, the music on this set is hardly a letdown or a come-on. In fact, it is perhaps the first real overview listeners have of Moore's career. There are 41 cuts recorded between 1948-1957 and arranged chronologically. These feature Moore as a sideman in groups led by Claude Thornhill, George Wallington, Machito, Slim Gaillard, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Kai Winding, Howard McGhee, Charlie Parker, and Cal Tjader. In addition, there are numerous selections interspersed between these recordings that feature Moore as a leader. Of course, there are the expected selections such as "Four and One More" with Getz; "Godchild" with Thornhill; and "Howard's Blues," recorded with McGhee and Machito. But there are some real surprises here as well, including "Bernie's Tune," recorded for Canadian television in 1950 with a young Paul Bley on piano; the unreleased "Knockout" with Wallington; and four tracks with his own septet (featuring Gerry Mulligan, Winding, and Wallington), including "Lestorian Mode," "Goldrush," and "The Mud Bug." The U.K.'s Giant Steps (a division of Cherry Red) deserves tremendous credit for assembling this great set at such an attractive price. ~ Thom Jurek, RoviPerformers: Al Antonucci - French Horn; Jose Mangual - Bongos; Luis Miranda - Conga; Ralph Miranda - Conga; Ubaldo Nieto - Timbales; Cal Tjader - Vibraphone; Bayardo Velarde - Timbales;

Kerouac's Spontaneous Poetics

Kerouac's Spontaneous Poetics

$5.48

While a legend has developed about the man Jack Kerouac, there has not been a thorough study of what he wrote. This is the first book to explore his place in American literature by establishing the total design of his work. Regina Weinreich contends that Kerouac wrote with this "grand design" in mind: that he thought of his works as "one vast book" a "Divine Comedy of Buddha" that he called The Legend of Duluoz. The nature of Kerouac's "spontaneous bop prosody" is discussed in relation to the work of Thomas Wolfe and Henry Miller. Kerouac compared his "loose style" to that of a jazz horn-player sounding one long note. While this explains Kerouac's method, Weinreich seeks further to define the unity of his works, from The Town and the City, On the Road, and Visions of Cody to Desolation Angels and Vanity of Duluoz, which she argues brings the legend full circle. "Regina Weinreich draws together the threads of artistic influences that ultimately define Jack's writing...."—William Burroughs "Regina Weinreich has done Kerouac's work the long overdue favor of the attention of a first rate mind...."—John Clellon Holmes
